Biologists often use species-area relationship plots to visualize patterns of biodiversity on islands. Island biogeographical theory suggests that small islands have fewer species living on them compared to large islands. Visualizing the trend in island size versus the number of species on each island helps researchers determine whether their system follows this theory. My poster introduces the R package I wrote called SSARP (Species-/Speciation-Area Relationship Projector), which provides researchers with a suite of methods for creating species-area relationships for island systems using occurrence records from GBIF (the Global Biodiversity Information Facility). SSARP serves as an all-in-one tool for gathering occurrence records from the web, finding island areas, and creating species-area relationship plots.
